Dogs like myself are faithful companions, and we depend on our owners for good care. We are pampered til we leave the Earth. To help your canine friend live a healthy life, you should know some of the most common health problems dogs face, their signs, and what you can do about them. One of the most painful things us dogs suffer from is a ear infection.

Ear infections are a common canine health problem, and they can be caused by allergies, yeast, ear mites (Otodectes cynotis mites), bacteria, hair growth deep in the ear canal and other factors. We dogs do not know how to communicate to people about our pain and discomfort of having an ear infection.
That's exactly what happened to me, my two-legged folk did not notice I had one for a few days.

Typical symptoms of a dog ear infection include:

  • Head shaking or head tilting
  • Ear odor (quite malodorous)
  • Vigorous scratching
  • Lack of balance (not usual)
  • Unusual back-and-forth eye movements
  • Redness of the ear canal
  • Swelling of the outer portion of the ear
  • Brown, yellow, or bloody discharge

Ensuring that our ears are healthy and clean does not mean you have to take us to the vet every time, nor does it have to burn your wallets.

Did you "hear"? There is a homemade remedy for cheap ear maintenance, vinegar and water. Just combine one part vinegar and two parts water and you'll be killing those inner ear bugs in no time!

Oh and don't forget to use cotton balls or gauze pads, as cotton buds (Q-tips) can damage our ear drum due to its harder edge and it's just plain uncomfortable for us doggies.
Always take your dog to the veterinarian if you think your dog has an ear infection. In most cases, cleaning and medicating the ear canal will quickly prevent the problem. Do you "hear" me?
